In the first of a series of explorations into the celebration of Black British Music Icons. Simba + Sloane commissioned Adryan Tunde Abii-Smith to create representations of 'some' of the UK's most iconic musicians.
In a survey carried out in August 2020, people were asked to recommend musicians based on an iconic feature or look. This allowed for illustrations that were reductive whilst recognisable.

Adryan Tunde Abii-Smith on Illustration -
"I got into illustrating solely to improve on a skill I really admired in others. I found it helpful to focus on something creative during peak lockdown, and it was a way of expressing my artistic intrigue with black people. I've always wanted to delve into that side of myself, traditionally I have worked in pretty corporate environments, so to take this up on a freelance basis has been... Refreshing!
I have been illustrating for a few months now and feel like I add to my skills every time I commit to an original idea, or when asked to create a piece for someone. It's been a saviour to my mental health and a form of escapism. I won't be stopping any time soon!"
